Skiing in Mellau-Damüls

109 km of pistes, 27 lifts, and a ski bus that stops one minute’s walk from the house. The largest ski area in the Bregenzerwald starts with a stroll.

The ski area

The ski area: two valleys, one linked area

The linked Mellau-Damüls ski area joins two villages into one connected area with 109 km of pistes and 27 lifts and cable cars. From Mellau the cable car takes you up; at the top you cross over to Damüls and back again. You can ski all day without taking the same run twice.

Damüls has earned a reputation that reaches well beyond the region: it is considered one of the snowiest inhabited places in the Alps.

The terrain is varied. There are long, forgiving red runs for families, a few seriously steep descents, plenty of room off-piste and nursery slopes right by the valley stations.

What you can reach without the cable car

Opposite the front door, two things begin that you don’t need to drive to: the cross-country ski trail through the valley, groomed for both classic and skating. The groomed winter walking trail, cleared daily and fine in ordinary winter boots. And a few minutes further on, near the village centre, the natural toboggan run with a place to stop for food and drink.

Ski touring

Ski touring: when the lift isn’t enough

Ski touring has grown strongly in the Bregenzerwald in recent years, and Mellau is a good base. There are tours for beginners that climb within the ski area, and serious undertakings in the Bregenzerwald mountains.

In practice

How a ski day works here

  1. 01

    Breakfast in the common room

On request. If you would rather cook for yourself, every apartment has a fully equipped kitchen.

  2. 02

    Skis from the ski room

A lockable room on the ground floor for skis, boards and boots. No climbing stairs in ski boots.

  3. 03

One minute’s walk to the ski bus

The ski bus is free for guests and takes you to the valley station of the Mellau cable car in a few minutes.

  4. 04

Evenings: the Stube or the toboggan run

The Stube, our traditional parlour, is the shared common room and open to all guests — for low-key après-ski or an evening of Käsknöpfle, the Bregenzerwald cheese spätzle.

About the season: In winter we let from early December to early April. During the Christmas holidays, the February school holidays and over Easter a minimum stay of seven nights with Saturday arrival usually applies. These weeks book up early — ask in good time.
